Standing Up For Pay And Compensation

Over the last decade, we've seen real terms pay cuts across the research councils eat away at our earnings. Compared to RPI, many parts of what is now UKRI have seen pay decline to 4 days' pay for five days' work over the last 14 years or so.

The authority to raise our pay fairly rests with BEIS and the Treasury. Industrial action from our members would be aimed at sending a message to those holding the purse strings. Let us be clear: our own management and the Pay and Reward Team have put considerable effort into making a case for better pay, but the government limits their powers to improve it. We must not misplace our anger onto our internal colleagues whose efforts align with ours.
