Building Research Establishment
The Building Research Establishment (BRE) is a former UK government establishment (but now a private organisation, funded by the building industry) that carries out research, consultancy and testing for the construction and built environment sectors in the United Kingdom. BRE is headquartered in Watford with regional sites in Glasgow and Port Talbot. BRE has trust status and is separated into two organisations beneath that – BRE and BRE Global
Among the BRE's areas of interest are participation in the preparation of national and international standards and building codes, including the UK Building Regulations.
BRE is an independent and impartial, research-based consultancy, testing and training organisation, offering expertise in every aspect of the built environment and associated industries. It helps clients create better, safer and more sustainable products, buildings, communities and businesses – and supports the innovation needed to achieve this. It is also a UKAS Accredited Testing Laboratory.
BRE Global works to ensure that fire, security, environmental and other products and services provide the quality of performance and protection that they should. BRE Global is an independent, third-party approvals organisation, offering certification of products, services and systems to an international market. Testing and approvals are carried out by recognised experts in world-class facilities. It also offers cutting-edge research and consultancy services.
Prospect is only trade union formally recognised by BRE and we represent staff across the entire organisation. We represent members on all matters including pay, grading and terms and conditions as well as providing individual representation where necessary.
