David Davis' speech on the Brexit transition period prompts more questions about free movement of people

EU and UK flags on a flat surface

Responding to David Davis' speech on the Brexit transition period Sue Ferns, senior deputy general secretary of Prospect union, said:

“Whilst we welcome confirmation from the government that free movement of people will continue during the transition period, we continue to believe that the government should go further and commit to maintaining reciprocal freedom of movement as part of the final agreement with the EU.

“The government must also urgently clarify that those UK and EU citizens who make use of their freedom of movement during the transition will in no way be treated as second class citizens or face any additional barriers to exercising their full rights as citizens.

“People who have moved from the EU to the UK to make their lives here continue to make a huge contribution to our society and our economy, it is essential that throughout this process the government treats them with the humanity and respect that they deserve.”
