"However, work must now begin to examine the detail of the statement and we have sought an urgent meeting with the company. In particular, we will be looking to discuss their statements in relation to any cost cutting initiatives. The need for continued safe, secure and reliable generation will be at the forefront of those.
"At first glance, it seems the proposals will allow British Energy to compete in the electricity market under the existing trading arrangements, such as the New Electricity Trading Arrangements. We do, however, believe that these arrangements need to be fundamentally reviewed and hope that the Energy White Paper will address this.
"Our priority is to ensure through discussion that our members' terms and conditions and employment security are safeguarded."
