Aberthaw power station set to close

After around 5 decades of power generation, RWE has announced its intention to close its power station in Aberthaw in South Wales as from 31 March 2020.

Aberthaw is a coal-fired power station with a capacity of around 1,560 MW and it can generate enough power to meet the needs of around 1.5 million households.

The decision to close follows investment over recent years to reduce emissions at Aberthaw, such as the Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) that reduces sulphur emissions by up to 95% and the installation of low NOx boiler technology reducing emissions by over 90%.

Prospect Negotiator Kevin Warden said “While all existing coal-fired power stations have a limited life, the announcement to close Aberthaw in 2020 will still hit the staff who work there hard.

"Prospect will help and support members over the coming months”
