“We expect support for action to be overwhelming,” says Prospect national secretary Alan Denney. “This will send a loud and clear message that members are fed up with being treated as second class workers in HIAL.”
In the six years since HIAL brought security provision in house, management has failed to agree equal pay, holidays, and sick pay for AMSL’s airport security workers.
When it comes to sick pay they receive just 2.5 days per year compared with six months’ full pay – in simple terms – for the staff who manage these members, and other colleagues in the wider group.
Adds Denney: “The terms and conditions they work under leaves them wondering just where ministers in the Scottish government, which owns the company, see the fair work agenda applying in this business.”
The ballot result will be known early in the afternoon of Friday 27 March and the outcome will be shared with members, the company and Scottish government at the earliest opportunity.
Prospect representatives from AMSL will be meeting Denney at 13:00 to consider the result and to determine the nature and duration of the action that they will take.
The union’s campaign for fair terms and conditions will include both strike action and action short of a strike if members return a positive result in the ballot.
The union represents more than 120 of AMSL’s 160 workers covering eleven Scottish airports including Dundee, Inverness, Stornoway and Sumburgh.
