Prospect condemns £65m States of Jersey cuts

Prospect is preparing its response to a range of attacks on its members in Jersey, as new details emerge of planned spending cuts by the States of Jersey Government.

The union has now received the States of Jersey draft business plan for 2012-14, which contains "more questions than answers" for employees, according to Prospect negotiator Kevin McAlonan.

He said: "It is based on the desire to deliver £65m in savings by 2013, without satisfactorily explaining why this is necessary.

"We know that around £14m of this target is to be made through staff savings."

McAlonan has issued a newsletter for members on the island, which warns of:

  • a review of civil service terms and conditions that seeks to save £14 million on its pay and conditions bill, including rumours of a possible pay freeze from January 1, 2012
  • attempts to impose a change of ownership on members working in Jersey Enterprise and Jersey Tourism, moving members out of civil service employment
  • proposals for major changes in the structure of staffing at Jersey Airport, mainly impacting on air traffic engineers and air traffic control assistants. The ATEs are facing job cuts that would cut current numbers almost in half. The ATCA grade would be phased out completely by 2014.

McAlonan said Prospect's Jersey Civil Service Association executive will be meeting soon to draw up a response to these proposed attacks.
