Prospect Scottish Aviation

Prospect members in Aviation employers across Scotland are Organising. If you want some real world examples of how Prospect members have made a difference in their workplaces, take a look below.

In 2016, Prospect successfully defended an aircraft engineer working at British Airways after he was unfairly dismissed from the company for a small error. 

In 2017, Prospect gained recognition in Lufthansa Technik Maintenance International for supervisors, licenced engineers, mechanics and store personnel based at the hangar at Gatwick Airport.  Also in 2017, Prospect won recognition for helicopter mechanics and engineers at Babcock Mission Critical Services (Offshore), closely followed by a successful recognition campaign for the helicopter pilots in the same company. In 2018 both pilots and engineers at Babcock Mission Critical Services (Onshore) were also granted recognition. 

In 2019, Prospect won a compensation claim for 9 members at Lydd airport after their employer failed to correctly apply the TUPE regulations when it contracted out its air traffic control staff.

During the 2020 pandemic Prospect negotiated a good deal for staff at Prestwick airport who were put on furlough when the Covid-19 restrictions meant they could not work. Prospect continues to lobby the UK Government to ensure that jobs in the aviation are protected from the double threat of Brexit and the Coronavirus pandemic.

During 2020, Prospect members working as aircraft engineers and mechanics at Prestwick Aircraft Maintenance Ltd have been seeking recognition. The company has been strongly resisting the requests for recognition, despite the fact that its parent company RyanAir does recognise unions in some areas. Prospect are not afraid to defend members who have been treated unfairly at this company and are currently in the process of taking claims to an employment tribunal on behalf of members who were dismissed for refusing to accept a 50% pay cut at the start of the pandemic. In 2019, the company dismissed a staff member only days before he died of a terminal illness. Following a successful campaign from Prospect members, the company agreed to retract the dismissal and subsequently paid out a death in service benefit to the family. A similar case at a different employer was successfully taken to tribunal by Prospect in 2019. 

Prospect has recognition at Highland and Islands Airports Ltd, but our members in air traffic control strongly oppose  plans to restructure the service and bring in remote towers. Members are planning the strongest possible protest, with a campaign of industrial action in 2021. This action will defend the high quality jobs at HIAL which in turn support economy of remote island communities.
