Rally for jobs

A future for families, a future that works

Next Wednesday (March 13) is your chance to show the Chancellor what you feel about austerity. The TUC has organised a pre-budget rally in central London in advance of Budget day on March 20. It will take place at the Emmanuel Centre, 23 Marsham Street, London SW1 from 6pm until 7.30pm on March 13.

The rally – in support of a budget for jobs, growth and families – is called 'A future for families, a future that works'.

Parliamentary and Campaigns Officer Parmjit Dhanda said: “The focus will be on the living standards squeeze on ordinary families: pay stagnation and a living wage, the rising costs of living, cuts to public services, the impact of the benefit changes and unemployment. The rally will call for a future that works and an end to austerity policies that are holding back growth and threatening a triple dip recession.

“So far we're pretty confident that we're going to be okay on capacity, as it's a big venue. However, if large numbers of people come spontaneously on the evening we may run out of space. As a result we're afraid we're not able to totally guarantee a place in the hall, even if you have registered an interest through the site.”

Prospect wants to play a role supporting this event. If you are planning to attend please email [email protected]

The hashtag for the event will be #budgetrally

Speakers include a representative from an ETUC affiliate to provide a Europe-wide perspective and a range of speakers from campaign organisations or service users themselves.

The venue holds up to 1,600 including two overspill rooms with a live feed from the hall.

Nearest Tube stations are Westminster (Jubilee, Circle and District lines), St James' Park (Circle and District lines) and Victoria (Victoria, Circle and District lines). It's within walking distance of Waterloo, Victoria and Charing Cross mainline stations.

The nearest car parks are in Abingdon Street, Horseferry Road and Rochester Row. There is also limited on street parking adjacent to the building using meters on Marsham St.

The TUC has set up a registration page: www.tuc.org.uk/afutureforfamilies for people to sign up so we can get the best picture of demand for attendance at the event and plan accordingly, and also to keep those interested informed of developments, but they are not specifically issuing tickets.

To be sure of getting a space, we'd recommend people arriving as early as they can, and doors will be opening for entry at 5:30pm. The speakers will start at 6pm prompt.

The Emmanuel Centre is a wheelchair accessible building, but attendees in wheelchairs will need to access via the Tufton St entrance. We'll set aside space to make access for wheelchairs easier. If you will need extra help getting into the hall, please consider coming slightly earlier if possible, and ask a rally steward for assistance once you arrive at the building.

The rally will be amplified and there will be a hearing loop in operation, as well as sign language interpretation. If you have specific access needs, please get in touch online: http://www.goingtowork.org.uk/contact-us/
