Q: How do Prospect members get help and advice?
A: Prospect members can access support from the union through local branch contacts, who are involved in negotiations and are trained to advise and represent members. Issues that require higher-level input may be referred to one of the union's professional officers.
Q: Why is support from Prospect different from going to a lawyer?
A: There are many differences. The main one is that a lawyer will not be familiar with MoD terms and conditions of employment and cannot represent you in internal processes. So support from Prospect is better for resolving issues within MoD. And if your issue cannot be resolved that way, Prospect's legal department will advise on whether you could go to an Employment Tribunal. If you could, and if Prospect agrees to take your case, there will be no charge to you.
Q: What is Prospect's role in relation to MoD?
A: Prospect is a valued stakeholder within MoD, recognised as the authentic and representative voice of professional and specialist staff. We negotiate terms and conditions of employment for all professionals and specialists working within the Department, and are asked to give input on employment policies and practices, the grading of jobs and many other matters directly affecting your working life.
Q: How does Prospect represent me?
A: Prospect negotiates for all professionals and specialists, but only Prospect members get an input into Prospect's decisions and priorities. Prospect is a democratic organisation that makes every effort to keep in touch with members' concerns, through our branches and by consulting members directly through surveys and other feedback channels.
