New TUC report sets out the challenges facing young workers

The Trades Union Congress has issued a new report which highlights nine key challenges facing young workers. The report marks the start of a TUC campaign to reach out to this group.

Job/career options: nurse, doctor, police etc

According to the report, Britain’s young core workers are defined as:

  • aged 21–30
  • predominantly working in the private sector
  • working full or part-time
  • not in full-time education
  • earning low to average wages.

The report, which has lots of useful information about the demographics, values and experiences of this group of young people, sets out the nine key challenges facing them:

  • low pay
  • poor quality jobs
  • lack of training opportunities
  • overqualification
  • weak opportunities for progression
  • underemployment
  • precarious working conditions
  • bullying and harassment
  • pressure on working parents.

You can find out more about the campaign to reach out to young workers on the TUC’s blog.

Paul Novak, TUC deputy general secretary, will outline the challenges facing young workers in the UK today and in the future at Prospect’s YPN forum in November.
