Northern Ireland has the highest number of low paid workers of any UK region. Almost a quarter of NI workers earn below the Living Wage, and that number is increasing.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions is calling for:

  • an enforced minimum wage
  • a commitment to the living wage
  • a crackdown on excessive executive pay and bonuses
  • a crackdown on tax dodging, evasion and avoidance.

ICTU has organised a march and rally to coincide with 18 October events in London and Glasgow.

It is asking people to assemble in Writer’s Square, Belfast, BT1 1DL at 12 noon for speeches and music. The march will start at 12.45.

Philip O’Rawe, Prospect’s lead representative in Northern Ireland, said:

“We are asking members, and their families and friends, to join us on the 18th to make a stand against growing inequality, low pay and attacks on living standards. It is now very clear that these attacks are largely driven by ideological, rather than economic, factors.

“In Northern Ireland the effects of austerity policies are now visible for all to see in the current crisis in our local public services, and yet there is a better, fairer, way which would protect public services, reduce inequality and improve people’s standard of living.”
