Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Scotland's Deputy First Minister, put the arguments in favour of independence, and Anas Sarwar MP, Deputy Leader of the Scottish Labour Party, argued for Scotland to remain part of the UK.

The discussion was facilitated by Magnus Gardham, political editor of The Herald.

Delgates from across the UK stood up to ask the panellists their opinions on remaining in NATO and the future of Trident; cuts in the heritage sector; nuclear new build; cleaning up Scotland's nuclear legacy; telecoms regulation; science; the future of air traffic control at Prestwick Airport; and government service.

Today's debate follows on from Prospect's work with members in Scotland in the build-up to the referendum, which has highlighted their desire and vision for a Scotland founded on social justice and equality. Prospect is not affiliated to any political party and has no interest in telling members how to vote – but wants to ensure that whoever is in power looks after their interests.
