Defence specialists shocked at further cuts

Prospect has expressed its alarm at further redundancies announced by the defence and security company QinetiQ.

The job losses are at QinetiQ’s Technology Solutions Group (TSG) based at Malvern, Worcestershire. A consultation document has been issued that puts 126 employees ‘at risk’.

They include a number of signal-processing mathematical posts undertaken by highly skilled individuals whose capabilities will now be lost to QinetiQ.

Prospect national secretary David Luxton said: “It is yet another example of how cuts to the defence budget ripple through to the private sector. QinetiQ has lost around 800 posts in the last 12 months.

“Skills cannot be turned on or off like a tap. It will have a detrimental affect on future defence capabilities – as well as individuals, families and the local community.”

Prospect is urgently attempting to clarify the reasons for further redundancies in TSG, particularly when the skills are utilised in other business areas within QinetiQ.
