Prospect is committed to ensuring our workplace representatives have the skills and knowledge they need to carry out their trade union role effectively and to the best of their ability. We are constantly updating our online course offerings, check back here for the latest news.
All new reps will be required to get started by reading our Reps' Handbook before attending a Prospect rep course.
Reps Part 1: key skills for union reps
This course is designed to welcome you as a Prospect representative and introduce you to the role of a union rep and the skills needed to carry it out. We will help you to be an effective and confident union rep, build good relationships at work and build a stronger union organisation at local level. No previous training is needed. The training runs on a Monday, over 3 sessions: 9-10.15, 11-12.15 and 1-2.15 with up to 30 minutes homework required in-between.
After successfully completing this course you may wish to consider progressing to Reps 2: handling cases. We suggest a break of 2-3 months after completing this course before booking on to Reps 2 to ensure you can fully complete your action plan and embed your new skills.
If you are interested in becoming a H&S or environmental rep, the elements of this reps course are included in the content of both, therefore please book directly on to these courses.
Reps 2: Handling Cases
The aim of the course is to give you the skills and knowledge to represent your local members with their personal cases. After completing both Reps 1: key skills and Reps 2: handling cases the union will accredit you to represent members at formal meetings and hearings.
You should already have completed Reps Part 1: key skills before booking on this course. The training runs Tuesday to Thursday over 3 sessions: 10-12.30 or 2-4.30, with up to 1 hour homework required following sessions 1 and 2.
This course is designed to give you the skills and confidence to successfully engage in negotiations with employers in a collective bargaining environment. The course will focus on the psychology and tactics of negotiating as applied to a typical negotiating scenario. It will also improve your communication and interpersonal skills.
Completion of this course will better prepare you to negotiate effectively with employers and others. You should have attended Reps 1: key skills prior to attending this course. The course comprises of 3 sessions running Tuesday to Thursday: am/pm with some offline study.
Introduction to Employment Law
This course focusses on the Introduction to members’ rights at work. These sessions are geared at giving some basic tools for reps to use in negotiations and when dealing with personal cases.
The course is split into 3 sessions, each three hours in length. You are expected to commit to all 3 sessions (total of 9 hours commitment) as each covers a different topic:
- Introduction to statutory rights - looking at the range of rights, time limits, qualifying periods and status.
- Discrimination law - looking at the Equality Act, including in particular disability and assuring a pro-active approach.
- Unfair dismissal and redundancy - looking at constructive dismissal, variations, unfair dismissal and redundancy.
The course is designed for experienced and active union reps. Qualifying criteria to attend the course: ideally completion of Reps 1 and 2 (or with a place/date confirmed) with some experience of case work/or your Prospect full time Officer’s endorsement. (details of your FTO is provided during Reps part 1 & 2)

Bargaining for a Sustainable Workplace
The aim of this course is to give reps the practical skills for engaging with sustainability discussions and making changes in their workplace as well as engaging with wider environmental issues. For a wider flavour of the course Click here
The training is run over 3 weekly sessions: 10-1 with independent group work in-between.
Health & Safety
We are also running online H&S rep courses every month. The course takes approximately 12 hours work in total, including 4 scheduled 2.5 hour online sessions, and core activities to be completed between sessions. Trainees need to commit to attending all 4 sessions and completing all homework.

Introduction to Pensions
We are also running online Introduction to Pension courses. This training is appropriate for branch reps wanting to develop an understanding of pensions with a view to attending our Pension Champions course. This course provides an introduction to pensions for reps covering defined benefit, defined contribution and state pensions. The course takes approximately 5 hours work in total, over 2 scheduled 2.5 hour online sessions. Trainees need to commit to attending both sessions.
For new reps we request that you have attended Reps 1 training. Applications should be endorsed by your branch and full-time officer. We are also running online Pension Champions courses. We have two steams, private sector and public sector with content tailored to ensure it is relevant to reps. The course takes approximately 12 hours work in total, including 4 scheduled 2.5 hour online sessions, and core activities to be completed between sessions. Trainees need to commit to attending all 4 sessions and completing all homework.
Our normal requirement is for members to attend our Introduction to Pensions course. Applications should be endorsed by your branch and full-time officer.
