Prospect is committed to ensuring our workplace representatives have the skills and knowledge they need to carry out their trade union role effectively and to the best of their ability.

All new reps will be required to get started by reading our Reps' Handbook before attending a Prospect rep course.

Reps Part 1: key skills for union reps

This course is designed to welcome you as a Prospect representative and introduce you to the role of a union rep and the skills needed to carry it out. We will help you to be an effective and confident union rep, build good relationships at work and build a stronger union organisation at local level. No previous training is needed. The training is run on a Monday, over 3 sessions: 9-10.15, 11-12.15 and 1-2.15 with up to 30 minutes homework required in-between.

After successfully completing this course you may wish to consider progressing to Reps Part 2 (handling cases). We suggest a break of 2-3 months after completing this course before booking on to Reps Part 2, to ensure you can fully complete your action plan and embed your new skills.

If you are interested in becoming a H&S or environmental rep, the elements of this reps course are included in the content of both, therefore please book directly on to these courses.

Reps 2: Handling Cases

The aim of the course is to give you the skills and knowledge to represent your local members with their personal cases. After completing both Reps 1 (key skills) and Reps 2 (handling cases) the union will accredit you to represent members at formal meetings and hearings.

You should already have completed Reps Part 1 (key skills) before booking on this course. The training is run Tuesday to Thursday over 3 sessions: 10-12.30 or 2-4.30, with up to 1 hour homework required following sessions 1 and 2.

Negotiating Skills

This course is designed to give you the skills and confidence to successfully engage in negotiations with employers in a collective bargaining environment. The course will focus on the psychology and tactics of negotiating as applied to a typical negotiating scenario. It will also improve your communication and interpersonal skills.

Completion of this course will better prepare you to negotiate effectively with employers and others. You should have attended Reps 1 (key skills) prior to attending this course. The course comprises of 3 sessions running Tuesday to Thursday: am/pm with some offline study.

Introduction to Employment Law

This course is designed to introduce you to the structure and workings of the legal system as affects people at work. It is an introduction only and is not intended to develop expertise in employment law.

The course is split into 3 sessions. It is expected that you commit to all 3 sessions as each covers a different topic. The 3 sessions will focus on:

  • Introduction to statutory rights - looking at the range of rights, time limits, qualifying periods and status.
  • Discrimination law - looking at the Equality Act, including in particular disability and assuring a pro-active approach.
  • Unfair dismissal and redundancy - looking at constructive dismissal, variations, unfair dismissal and redundancy.

The course is designed for experienced union representatives and those with considerable local responsibility. Qualifying criteria to attend the course, completion of Reps 1 and 2 and 6 months case handling experience. It requires a sound body of pre-existing knowledge of how the union organises and allocates responsibilities.

Bargaining for a Sustainable Workplace

The aim of this course is to give reps practical skills for engaging with sustainability discussions and making changes in their workplace as well as engaging with wider environmental issues. For a wider flavour of the course Click here

No previous training is required. The training is run over 3 weekly sessions: 10-1 with independent group work in between.

Health & Safety*

We are also running online H&S rep courses every month. The course takes approximately 12 hours work in total, including 4 scheduled 2.5 hour online sessions, and core activities to be completed between sessions. Trainees need to commit to attending all 4 sessions and completing all homework.
